Saving ASU After Monsoon Beating
In July 2008, a powerful monsoon plowed through the valley striking several homes and businesses. Arizona State University (ASU) was one of them. ASU facility supervisors turned to Emergency Restoration Experts for help. Various university buildings were affected. However, the Architectural Building (the library) was hit the hardest. So that’s where we started. We received our first call from concerned ASU representatives late in the evening. We immediately rallied our crews and got to work. The building contained thousands of gallons of water. And, water was continuing to come in from the surrounding surface area and from overhead. Our first order of business was to reach out to the key ASU officials involved and assure them that we’d take care of everything. We told them exactly what to expect from our team over the next several days. And, we answered all of their questions. The ASU officials were concerned that many important documents and archives were damaged and weren’t replaceable. We immediately identified those items and our drying crew started the dry-down process. Deploying our water extraction and drywall crews, we worked non-stop for 24-hours to mitigate any further damage from occurring. We immediately noticed that the building was taking in moisture from overhead and were concerned that it would exacerbate the situation, so we built a containment covering the walls and ceiling. We developed a mitigation strategy allowing 80% of the building to remain open for student and faculty use. We incorporated a walkway to the front doors of the library for visitor access. Our content crews worked feverishly moving large desks, filing cabinets, books, stationery, and other items to allow for a smooth transition during the mitigation process. To assist the dry-out process, we built an on-site drying chamber with a desiccant dehumidifier for items that weren’t fully soaked. We examined our progress, ongoing, by monitoring our equipment. After several days, we knew that the facility was drying down nicely. ASU officials were surprised that we didn’t have to demo all of the wet drywall. We did cut some of the perimeters of the drywall, but saved other areas because of the level of air movement and dehumidification we provided with our equipment. And ASU appreciated the cost-saving measures. According to ASU's Sally Forney,” Emergency Restoration Experts saved ASU tens of thousands of dollars.” The Matthews Center at ASU was also hit hard and completely flooded with water and mud. Because this building houses the school newspaper and music station, along with music and television live feeds, we were informed that we couldn’t disconnect from the live feed tower. Doing so would interrupt the television feed and music playing in several buildings throughout the university. So, we worked around it. We removed all furniture and electrical components with exception of those connecting to the live feed tower. Then we removed the carpet and vinyl cover base, and began the drying process. Our crews worked day and night to mitigate the loss. At one point we even had more than 50 Emergency Restoration Experts crew members on the job. But it paid off. We recovered the building and equipment without disturbing the live feed throughout the entire process. Needless to say, ASU was one happy customer! |
